In my English Composition 1 course I had to write a research paper, as a formal assignment for the class. I used these guidelines for the assignment to make sure I fully understood what I needed to do for the assignment, so I could submit my best work. This assignment felt very important to me because of the process I had to undertake to make sure I did it correctly.
was daunted at the idea of doing the paper because up until this point I had mostly written narrative papers for my English classes. However, this was a much different kind of paper, which required me to think in different ways. On my first draft I felt that my own voice did not come out enough, and that i argued more on the backs of other people instead of using my own words. However, after this was pointed out to me I sat down, and had to rethink my entire process. I sat down, and argued almost as if I did not need any sources using only my voice in the paper. After this I went back and added to support of others to make sure that I had a solid paper.
While other teachers may not have really prepared me for this type of assignment. Professor Mangini made sure to assign many blog assignments that were relevant to the assignment, to make sure we were totally prepared to take this paper on regardless of how much experience we had prior. The first was our 10th blog post "Summary and Rhetorical Analysis of Where to Invade Next." Which made us think about one of our main sources in more depth so we could really narrow down what we would want to make our argument on. He further helped us develop our argument by making us dive even further into the film, and what arguments could be made in the blog post "Where to Invade Next? An Argument."
While professor Mangini did his best to prepare us for the assignment, it did not mean that any of our drafts would be perfect. For instance I felt that there were a lot of things I could improve on my last draft if I was given more time. I would improve my voice in the paper, to make it feel more like I was doing the arguing, and not riding off of what other people have done. I also would have worked harder to integrate the quotes in a smoother manner, to make the whole paper flow better, and again make it seem like I was arguing more with my own voice.
Overall I felt this was a very important assignments because it highlighted many of my own weaknesses to me, and made me realize that I can not use the same process for every kind of thing. I learned that my approach must be flexible, and able to adaspt to any kind of assignment or paper that I need to do, if I want to be the best writer that i can be.
